It will be nationally and locally recognized as the best value-added education because of its success in developing community leaders for an increasingly diverse world.

History

Rockhurst draws upon a tradition of education in continuous practice for more than 475 years. Founded in 1910, The Academy of Rockhurst College graduated its first students in 1917. In 1923, The Academy became Rockhurst High School.

Faith and Service Leadership

Faith and Service are at the heart of our mission at Rockhurst High School. The pastoral ministry office organizes student retreats, school Masses, and prayer services. Rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition, all programs offered at Rockhurst foster a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ; this includes students, faculty, parents, trustees and alumni. Students are invited to take an active role in our pastoral program. In particular, juniors and seniors take on leadership roles for retreats and other spiritual events. Program offerings are listed below:

  • Class Retreats
  • Masses, prayer services, and daily morning prayer
  • Sophomore Family Conversation Program
  • Mission Week and the Harvest Food Drive
  • Service Trips to Tijuana, Belize, Guatemala, Urban Kansas City, Tennessee and more.

The Ignatian service program at Rockhurst provides our students with the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their commitment to being men of competence, conscience, and compassion. Christian service is an integral part of the Ignatian, Jesuit educational experience and is sewn into the fabric of our community. Students of all grades participate in year-round service opportunities, as individuals and as small groups. All students are required to complete over 150 hours to graduate. In the 2015 school year, Rockhurst students completed more than 57,000 hours of service.

Theology is an integral part of the Rockhurst High School education. During their four years of high school, students also undertake a rigorous academic study of Christianity, social justice, moral issues, comparative religions and scripture. These courses draw upon many authors and texts including Plato, Aristotle, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Papal Encyclicals, Dorothy Day, and the New American Bible.
