CCO Builds Worldwide Relationships
Every year, the College Counseling Office (CCO) at Rockhurst High School helps around 250 young men make one of the most important decisions of their lives: where to attend college.
Rockhurst's CCO focuses on aiding the students in any way possible, from assistance with applications to essay writing to connecting current students with alums who are at a specific college or university. The office also hosts more than 100 higher education schools every year, which have representatives visit Rockhurst during activity periods, college nights, and special events. The team also visits between seven and twelve schools per year, and varies those visits from selective private schools to public state schools.
Some of the schools with which the CCO maintains a relationship, and where Rockhurst alums currently attend, include Vanderbilt, Villanova, TCU, South Carolina, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Brown, Stanford, Pennsylvania, and the University of Chicago.
"A big part of our job is cultivating relationships with admissions representatives from these colleges and universities," said Mrs. Fola Okediji, Director of College Counseling. "We encourage them to get to know our school and students, and we keep them informed on the great things happening here at Rockhurst, such as the STEAM initiative, growing fine arts program, and countless co-curriculars."
Along with Mrs. Okediji, Mr. Rich Sullivan, Assistant Director of College Counseling, and Mrs. Lyn Rixson, College Counseling Administrative Assistant, make up the Rockhurst CCO.
This semester, Rockhurst's CCO was invited to an international conference for the first time. Mrs. Okediji attended counselor conferences and sessions at the University of St. Andrew's (Scotland), University of Dundee (Scotland), University of Edinburgh (Scotland), Trinity College Dublin, and University College Dublin.
Three recent Rockhurst alums are currently enrolled at two of these schools. Tommy Poskin '15 and Michael Rebein '15 attend the University of St. Andrew's and Ciaran Molloy '16 attends Trinity College Dublin.
At the University of St. Andrew's conference, high school counselors from across the globe represented their schools, including: China, Canada, Costa Rica, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and India. Along with Rockhurst, two U.S. Jesuit high schools were in attendance: Fordham Prep (NY) and St. Ignatius (IL).
"Seeing some of the most historic colleges in the world was a great experience," said Mrs. Okediji. "But the main point of the trip was to continue to build relationships all over the world. There are students in the school who may want to go to a college outside of the United States, and our office is doing everything we can to make sure our students have the best shot of getting into their top choices, wherever that may be."
